Good morning goblins!
The Essen mist has settled in the Bog and with our agreements formalised, it is time for me to share with you the great news we have regarding our year ahead.
Before even Room 17 existed, Anka, Anders and I were thinking of a system to recreate 3D environments for our RPGs and dungeon crawling games. Playing with minis in 2D tiles does not quite bring that immersive feeling and personally, I have always missed the great approach Hero Quest, Space Crusade (MB) or Village of Fear and Dark World (Waddington Games) had to the 3D solution that somehow was lost in the early 2000s.
Weirdly enough, with the boom in the miniatures games, it somehow came a down in the 3D recreation of environments. We all know of great companies making stunning 3D dungeon systems in resin and other materials, but for some of us, most of those systems are just a dream to never be able to afford or require hobby skills (cleaning, assembling, painting), storage and transport and prep time that we simply don't have.
We wanted to create an affordable 3D environment system that everyone could enjoy in full either to play their RPG games or for their boardgames with minis and even for skirmish tabletop games! This is how Tenfold Dungeon (TFD-System) came to existence!
TFD-System™ not only holds a good area of 3D rooms and corridors of different sizes in a “standard” boardgame box, but because of the nature of its design, the coatings used and the highest quality cardboard stock - which is reinforced in the corners! it can also hold EVERYTHING a player or DM may need for their sessions – minis, dice, tokens, rules, etc. thus becoming a great storage system too.
One of our principles for a perfect playing area was to keep all the boxes neatly and sturdy together. That is why TFD is completed with a tailored designed clipping system so once laid out, the boxes will remain in place even when playing with that clumsy friend that keeps knocking down everything every time they move! This idea, combined with the intention of making the system as versatile as possible, generated our “door clips”.
These doors are three-pieces engineered clips that allow for multiple designs of frame and doors for more variability (we of course expect a good lot of these to unlock during the KS campaign!)
We are aiming at including secondary plastic clips that will help holding tight in place particularly larger boxes and walls.
Additionally to the boxes (the main rooms), TFD-System will include a selection of high quality cardboard partition walls to generate secondary rooms within rooms or recreate maze-like corridors. These walls will be connected to the rooms via a T-clip.
Once the 3D boxes are laid out, The TFD-System™ becomes a solid gaming surface with doors and complete walls that generates two areas keeping dice and minis/3D elements separated, avoiding disturbance on the scene at the peak of the fray!
Finally, the system would not be complete with two essential elements we wanted to include in our campaign: furniture and game markers.
I have mentioned before how much I liked the old 90's ideas that Hero Quest, Space Crusade, Dark World, etc brought to the table back in the days. That went too to the way they introduced affordable, clever and fully illustrated furniture to generate that immersive feel. As a tribute to those revolutionary ideas, we thought: "why not bringing back that great system to Tenfold Dungeon?" Nothing to invent here, we will just try to improve on it.
Anka could not leave this opportunity go by without adding D&D “must” condition markers and spell effect markers, and even a D&D/RPG DM screen, so I'm sure we will see a lot of these useful tools with the campaign too.
We are opening the campaign with three different designs starting at £35 to £40 each (with the expected price reduction for buying more than one set, of course!) with a corresponding Furnished Pledge Level at around £50-55 - with game markers, partition walls, secondary clips, furniture punchboards and all necessary plastic elements.
The campaign will open with three designs::
The cursed medieval castle (By Mary Safro and Dai Nguyen - our new in-house illustrator
The Dungeons & Sewers (by Dai)
Dark sci-fi hulk (by Beholder Factory team) bringing corridors and rooms for your favourite hulk busting games.
The cherry of the cake is that, the two high fantasy sets are introduced with a free downloadable exclusive 5th Ed RPG adventure written by Ben Warren and Sam Sleney (awarded co-authors of Sins)!
But of course we are not stopping here. In preparation for an exciting campaign we are already working on two more designs just in case we can fund them!
The Medieval Town - you will be able to play in a medieval fantasy town!. With the outside of the boxes representing the traditional town houses and the inside - when you enter them - fully illustrated and with a playable grid!
The Wizard’s Tower - A stackable TFD-System rising over 75cm!
But we also expect additional rooms to be unlocked, more punchboards filled with partition walls and furniture, new doors and clips designs and more RPG/Dungeon crawling markers to add value to each pledge!
AND FOR ALL YOU GOBS!
We have also commissioned a special Room 17 Games returning customer Miremarsh box that you will receive for free if you back the campaign. But fear not, if TFD-Systme does nothing to do for youo, you will be able to order the Miremarsh themed TFD-System box so your bog goblins can feel at home!
The Miremarsh box will depict a dark forest on the outside, with a marsh illustrated on the inside by the talented hand of David Lanza -
We will keep you all informed via the newsletter and Updates on this coming campaign and we will be delighted to know of your ideas and what would you expect to see for this system we are creating in the comments section!
And there is more, more, more!
Well, that is all about our next campaign coming in January, but that is not everything, of course. We have signed the talented and famous writer and game designer Gav Thorpe to work on the "Grimwaters" game (Title WIP). This is YOUR game, the continuation of Miremarsh, where a bunch of very characterful goblins - "the wanderers" - keep annoying the human village of Grimwaters (TBC) in a semi-coop adventure game.
Gav was working on a game system that fit the Grimwaters ideas perfectly. He is coming to visit us this Wednesday to show us the result. I'll make sure we take pics and keep you informed on the progress! But as an advance:
- Grimwaters will use the TFD-System for 3D houses for a full on 3D immersion
- Most MM goblins will have crossover rules with Grimwaters (so you can use your collection to try them on the new game).
- Some Grimwaters characters will have promo stats to play them in a Miremarsh games.
- Grimwaters is a new game system (1 to 1 scale) based on the same world that Miremarsh exist. You don't need Miremarsh to play Grimwaters and Grimwateres does not expand Miremarsh.
- Miremarsh the game will be available to buy during the campaign - should we make the KS exclusive available too? - what do you guys think?
- Grimwaters characters are already being created by Andres Martinez under Anka's design direction and Gav's requirements, so expect that MM feel again!
There is a lot more we are discussing and working on towards the end of our second running year, but as time goes and this update grows in length, I'll leave it here for the time being. Now, ASK AWAY and give us your most valuable input and ideas!
Best to all
